April A to Z Challenge: U is for unity candle

Unity candles are sometimes used in marriage ceremonies to symbolize the coming together of the two families.  Often the mothers light the family candles and then the bride and groom each hold their family’s candle and light the unity candle together.  It may be a larger candle or of a different colour and is placed in the centre with the family candles off to the prospective families sides.  It is usually lit after the vows and stays alight until the end of the ceremony.  For an outdoor ceremony it is a good idea to have the candles encased in glass holders to prevent them from blowing out if there is a breeze.
